While I have been reading Phoebe and her Unicorn, the comic strip, since it first appeared under the title Heavenly Nostrils, this story was completely new to me. For the first time, creator Dana Simpson has created an all-new graphic novel featuring the characters from the strip. While I had enjoyed the daily adventures of Phoebe, her unicorn friend, Marigold, and her other friends from school, it was nice seeing a longer adventure as they work to uncover the mysterious cause of a power (both electrical and magical) outage that comes with a severe ice storm. While the story was fairly straightforward, Simpson tells it with style and charm and humor. I always smile at Marigold's self-centeredness, but it's clear that when push comes to shove, her love for her friends actually comes first. While this may not be the best book to start the series with--it's the sixth, and presumes some knowledge of the characters and their relationships--it's an excellent entry in the series, and a fantastic comics story for school-age readers particularly, and lovers of fantasy and comics in general. The Magic Storm is different from previous books in the series, as this is an original graphic novel story, rather than a collection of comic strips. Author Dana Simpson allows us to get a bit closer to her characters with this format, and does a great job with inserting them into a more involved plot than we usually see them in.The story starts out simple enough with Phoebe and Marigold the Unicorn on their way to school. Everyone is talking about a huge ice storm that is supposed to hit later that day, which may cancel school. The storm hits as predicted, but not only does it knock out the power to the entire city, but it also knocks out Marigold's magical ability. Whatever is causing this storm is obviously not natural, as all magic in the world is slowly being drained. It's up to Phoebe, Marigold, Phoebe's friend Max, and Phoebe's "frenemy" Dakota (who has taken to riding on a throne being carried by her loyal goblins to get around) to get to the bottom of what's behind the storm and all magic suddenly disappearing.The story is just as funny as the comic strip usually is, but thanks to the graphic novel format, Simpson is allowed to go a bit deeper into her characters than she usually is. There are some scenes where Phoebe and Dakota talk about their complex rivalry/relationship that I found interesting, since their like/hate relationship (Dakota being a popular "mean girl" and Phoebe being a "nerd" in Dakota's eyes) has always been one of my favorite elements of the comic. I've always gotten the sense that they could be great friends if they weren't separated by the invisible wall of "popularity", and this story seems to hint at that a little. We also get to see Max's home life for the first time I believe, and I honestly would have liked to have seen more of it. Hopefully Simpson will show us a bit more of his parents in future comics.Overall, if you are a fan who has been reading the comic up to now, this will not disappoint. It has all the humor, heart and intelligence that you have come to expect. The arrival of a new Phoebe book is always something to celebrate, and The Magic Storm is no exception.
